July 2021 Update
First Month of Production Complete
Things are going great and the biggest things that I have to announce are:
I am building the game using Unreal Engine 5. It’s amazing and I am really enjoying working with the engine.
In fact, it’s such a good engine that based on my current schedule, I completed what I thought would be 13 weeks of work in 4 weeks. So, turns out it’s an even better engine than I thought. I am sure I’ll run into more hurdles later, but so far things are going way better than I expected.
At this point, I actually have the first pass of the majority of the systems for the game in and working.
It will be a game with a large open world, something I have spent many years doing at this point. I plan on leveraging Houdini to help make this an efficient process.
There will be horror-related themes.
I am not ready to talk about the specifics yet, but I have a Composer on the project. It is someone truly awesome and I am incredibly excited about this.

Time Tracking
Lastly, for people who care about the nitty gritty specifics of things. I have been tracking time carefully on the project.
I always wondered “Exactly how much time do indie devs spend on stuff like marketing, legal, etc.?” So, here’s a breakdown on how I have been spending my time on the project in this first month.
For anyone who is wondering “Where’s programming?” on here, I am doing this all via Blueprint in Unreal, so my “programming” has sort of been a mix of design/Blueprint creation.
The short version is, most my time has been spent on art and design and while there are a lot of hats to wear, currently it’s not taking up a huge chunk of my time to do all those other things.
